Don’t Worry, Be Ferry!

Irwan Uno — November 29, 2007 / 6:02 pm

If you are on a budget travel in Japan and feeling like enjoying some luxurious facilities, do not worry, take a ferry. It would be a wonderful experience.

Arrive Ferry

Well, just like in other countries, some of the ferries serving domestic routes in Japan are old. It is important then for you to do a little check before you go. Unfortunately, I’ve done some checking with the Japanese ferry operator websites, but most of them are available in Japanese only.

But still, try your luck! At least ask around before you decide which route you are going to take and which ferry operator you are going to use.

If you happened to be in Osaka, Osaka – Shikoku would be a nice route to try. This route is especially well known among Japanese as the Japanese pilgrimage route.

Most Japanese ferries offer three classes ticket.

Cheapest one is the 2nd class, without bed. If you are in this class, only common space with tatami mat available for you to sleep on.

More expensive than that, is the 2nd class with bed. Here, you may have a better night sleep since you are provided with bed. It is a dormitory style room filled with 4 to 12 beds.

Next, there is a 1st class room. This is especially good when you are traveling with small group and you feel like having a little privacy. The room is filled with 2 to 4 beds.

The most expensive one is the Special Class. Two beds in a room. Very nice especially when you are on a honeymoon.

Again, if your budget is limited, try the cheapest one. Still you can enjoy variety of luxurious amenities provided by the ship. Also not to mention that you can enjoy onsen on the ship with very nice view outside (read: Bath your problems away in Dogo Onsen).
