Abu Dhabi Mosque, Between Religious and Tourism

Today, mosque is not only for religious place for moslem to pray but it can be used for tourism object. We can see this in Abu Dhabi. A mosque, named Syekh Zayed mosque, which is located Uni Arab Emirat (UAE) is a good sample.

As a third biggest mosque, after Masjidil Haram in Mecca and Nabawi mosque in Madina, Syekh Zayed mosque was built in order to give honour for Sheikh Zayed, a father founder of Uni Emirat. The cost for build this mosque was about US$ 545 million and can accomodate about 40,000 person.

As I mentioned above, the function of this mosque is not only for pray but also as tourism object. Not only moslem, non moslem can visit this mosque to enjoy the beauty of this mosque.

For non moslem, there is some terms that must be obedient especially for women. For a woman, she must wear ‘jilbab’ or caftan. For general, non moslems are prohibited to touch Al Qur’an, in any reasons.

With existence of this mosque, Abu Dhabi government hopes foreign tourists come to Abu Dhabi not only visiting beaches and mega stores.
