Pekalongan Batik Industry is Flagging

fahmi — April 1, 2008 / 6:16 pm

Recently, batik industry (especially in Pekalongan, one of batik industry center) is flagging. The increasing of main materials is the main cause, otherwise the demand is decreasing as well. Some home industries were closed or inactive, because they can’t afford the outcome for the salary, electricity bill, and (still) the price of main materials.

For example, the price of cloth. It is increasing from Rp 6,000/yard to Rp 6,700/yard (about US$0.60 to US$0.67). Meanwhile malam’s price is also increasing more than 3 times, from Rp 4,000/kg to Rp 13,000/kg (about US$0.4 to US$1.3).

Too bad, actually batik industries have big potency to become tourism destination. Tourists, domestic or aboard, can learn how batik is made.
